Medical Experts Say Economic Recession Affecting Nigerians Mentally
The worrying mental toll Nigerians are currently facing due to the debilitation effect of recession which has gripped the country in the last two years has been brought to the notice of the Federal Government.
A group of Family physicians under the umbrella of the Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON) brought the notice to the FG at a World Family Physician Day seminar held at the Eko Hospital in Lagos.
The group informed that over seven million Nigerians are living with depression caused more by economic hardship which has seen a rise in suicide attempts in recent times.
Speaking at the seminar, President of SOFPON, Lagos Zone, Dr. Blessing Chukwukwelu said; “We hear of people drinking sniper to end their lives these days. Some leave suicide notes, many don’t.
“The economy is one of the environmental factors that can trigger depression and it is not a coincidence that it was the World Health Day Theme for 2017,” she added.
She also hinted that there is need for a higher index of suspicion by family physicians who must quickly identify mentally challenged patients who need to be managed quickly.
