Tragedy In Lagos As Teacher Stabs Her Husband To Death In Ikorodu (Photos)

A housewife has reportedly stabbed her husband to death during a fight at their residence in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state on Wednesday morning.

The suspect who is a teacher and a mother-of-two, revealed that she stabbed him in self defense, after being pinned down by the deceased, who was notorious for always beating her.

While speaking to the residents of the area who apprehended her after the incident, she said; “I didn’t kill him intentionally. He was always battering me. Today, he pinned me down and started beating me again.

“I picked the knife to scare him, but I mistakenly stabbed him. I couldn’t have killed my husband intentionally. In the past, I used to run out of the house when being beaten, but today, he locked everywhere to prevent my escape.

“My family have told me to divorce him but I didn’t want to, because he is the husband of my youth and we already have two children together. You can ask around, everyone knows he beats me always.”

If I hear!: Femi Gbajabiamila, reacts to backlash received after buying customized G-Wagon for his wife, says ”I saved up to buy the SUV”

Majority leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has reacted to the backlash he has received from Nigerians following the N75m customized Mercedez Benz G-Wagon he gave to his wife at her 50th birthday bash recently.

In a statement released this morning, Gbajabiamila says he saved up the money he used to buy the SUV. Read the statement below

My attention has been drawn to the extensive reports especially on social media regarding the presentation of a gift to my wife and best friend in celebration of her 50th birthday anniversary.

Naturally I had anticipated this occasion for quite a while and prepared by saving up for it in the last couple of years. I took the decision far back to present her with a significant gift, she was totally unaware of, to convey in part, the debt of my gratitude to her for standing by me through ‘thick and thin’. I could never have been half the man I am today without her support and unbelievable understanding. Truly, the monetary value of any gift real or imagined, pales in significance when I consider how much of a ‘rock and pillar’ she has been to me.

The presentation of the gift contrary to public perception, was to be a family affair in our home but it suffered some delays finally arriving when a number of guests were in to celebrate with my wife. It still would have remained a private affair, but I guess we underestimated the power of social media and very excited friends.

Having said this, I understand and appreciate the reaction of the public. As a public official, one must be held to a higher standard. My action was not meant to offend sensibilities and I regret that it did.

Being a leader in many spheres, I can very well understand the optics of it. But I would rather want it to be seen as what it is. An expression of deep appreciation and love for my wife of almost thirty years, rather than one of flamboyance.

I remain truly committed to my values of improving lives for my constituents and Nigerians at large. As the records will show, I have consistently expended much more in achieving this goal especially within my constituency, than I spend on my wife.

I thank you for your understanding

Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila

2019: My CCT Trial Was Politically Motivated – Senate President

The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has insisted that trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over the allegation of false asset declaration was political.

He made this view public in a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Yusuph Olaniyonu,

He made the clarification while reacting to a report that the trial, which is now before both the Supreme Court and the CCT, formed part of the discussions between the new People’s Democratic Party (nPDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

The Senate President faulted the report, maintaining that the issues being discussed between the nPDP and the APC leaderships were beyond personal matters and those who attended the meeting would attest to it.

He explained that he could have ignored the report, but he had decided to disclaim it as it might be perceived to have some level of authenticity due to the circumstances around it.

Senator Saraki further noted his stance on the trial that he would not accept any settlement of the asset declaration case outside the judicial process.

“He (Saraki) is confident that the court will give him justice and he will be exonerated of all charges as can be seen by the verdicts of the CCT and the Court of Appeal.

“In fact, he maintains his earlier position that the trial was politically and maliciously motivated,” the statement said.

The Senate President, however, warned all interested parties to allow the judiciary to freely and fairly decide on the issues before it.

He emphasised the need for the independence of the judiciary and ability of the court to adjudicate on all matters in the rule of law.

Saraki reiterated his belief that nobody should compromise national interest with personal issues, adding that this has guided his actions, conduct and utterances in the performance of his official duties in the last three years

He alleged that persistent persecution and intimidation have been directed at him and urged Nigerians to ignore the report about the meeting of the nPDP and APC leaders.

The senator maintained that he has no reason to depart from his avowed principle that Nigeria is greater than any individual, including himself.

Meet The Tough Female Judge Who Jailed Ex-Governor, Jolly Nyame

This is Justice Adebukola Banjoko of the Federal Capital Territory High Court who found former governor of Taraba State, Reverend Jolly Nyame guilty for criminal breach of trust on Wednesday.

She was so appalled at Nyame’s brazen theft of public money that she bellowed: “There’s no moral justification for the level of outright theft, and the Court must therefore, impose a statement, hopefully as a deterrent to other public officers, who may be similarly inclined”

“From the totality of facts before the court, Nyame approved N250 million for purchase of stationery, but is found to have no intention to fulfil the purpose,” Justice Banjoko held.

Justice Banjoko also noted that Nyame, a clergyman, as governor of Taraba, breached the trust reposed in him by the indigenes of the state, when he misappropriated N250 million which he approved purportedly for the purchase of stationery for the state.

In a ruling which lasted more than 4 hours, Justice Banjoko found Nyame guilty of 16 counts, bordering on criminal breach of public trust.

Nyame had during the trial denied knowledge of Salman Global Ventures Limited. But Justice Banjoko disagreed, saying that, “immediately the fund was released, his verbal instruction was given, that N180 million be paid to Salman Global Ventures”.

The judge further added that: “the audacity of the defendant to divert N180 million from the N250 to the company, shows that he had more than a casual interest and so can’t hide behind a screen”.

“There was no evidence to show that Salman Global Ventures bid for any contracts,” the trial judge said, noting that within five weeks, Salman Global Ventures received over N300 million from the state coffers.

The angry judge sentenced him to a total of 28 years in prison, 14 years of which was for criminal breach of trust.

Iniesta Reveals Battle With Depression

With the topic of mental health coming to the fore in recent times, Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta has revealed that he battled with depression following the passing of his friend Dani Jarque.

The former Espanyol player died in 2009 and Iniesta says he was so depressed that it got to a point he could not “take it anymore”

He said Jarque’s death at such a young age (26) had a profound impact on him and removed his zest for life.

Speaking to Antena 3TV, he said; “You feel that it’s not you, that you don’t enjoy things, that the people around you are just people,”

“You have no feelings or passion.

“You end up feeling empty inside and there is a moment that you realise that you cannot take it anymore.

“I had the ability to see that I needed to see someone to get out of that situation. The important thing is that in that period I never lost the spark.”

Iniesta is going to his last world cup and is hopeful that Spain does much better than in 2014 where they were knocked out in the group stage.

“We have a good team, a good mix of young people and those with more experience,” he said.

“We will go with a lot of expectation, I think we had two warnings at the European Championships and in Brazil which means that we have our feet on the ground.

“We will go step by step and we do the things right then we will be fighting for the title.”

JAMB announces closure of Direct Entry application, releases results of rescheduled UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Tuesday announced that the Direct Entry (DE) application, which began in December 2017, would close on June 4.

The Board’s Head of Media, Fabian Benjamin, made the announcement in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

According to Mr Benjamin, over 140,000 candidates have so far obtained the forms online.

He said that the closure became necessary in order to avail the board to plan ahead for the 2018 admission process into various institutions.

“With the policy meeting coming up on June 26, which involves the Minister of Education and all stakeholders in the sector, the 2018 admission guidelines would be discussed and approved for the board.

“This includes both for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and DE.

“Therefore, candidates who are still interested and want to apply for the DE should use the window period of seven days to apply, as no extension of date will be granted.”

Similarly, Mr Benjamin said that the board has released the results of the mop up examination conducted for candidates, who were rescheduled for the UTME on Saturday, May 26.

NAN recalls that the board had recently, conducted a mop up examination for over 12,000 candidates in some of its centres across the country.

This included those whose biometrics could not be captured during the initial period of the UTME in March, those who were yet to see their results and have not been involved in any form of malpractice.

Others included those who were unable to print out their e-slip before the earlier examinations and those whose centres were cancelled for suspected malpractices.

On the admission process, Mt Benjamin told NAN that the board frowned at some institutions that breached the constitutional guidelines for the entire process by making advertorials before the policy meeting.

He explained that all institutions must note that they are not to make any form of adverts for admissions into their schools until after the policy meeting.

According to the spokesman, this is because the meeting is the only authorised body that approves admission process for every preceding year.

“Advertising before the policy meeting is a violation and abuse of the entire process.

“They must recall that at the meeting, all proceedings, rules and regulations guiding the admissions are discussed and unanimously approved by all stakeholders.

“However, a list of institutions that breached this rule are being compiled by the board and to be forwarded to the appropriate body for sanction.”

Mr Benjamin added that in view of the above, those who intend to make admission adverts before the slated meeting, are urged to have a rethink and halt.

He also noted that the 2018 policy meeting of the education sector was coming early to allow institutions begin early admission.

Egypt’s Mohamed Salah’s shoulder injury will keep him out of action for three to four weeks, Liverpool’s club physiotherapist said, as the forward tries to recover in time for the World Cup.

The 25-year-old winger is desperate to play for Egypt in only their third World Cup and their first for 38 years.

“He is sad about what happened but is totally focused on recovery, seeing when he can be ready,” physiotherapist Ruben Pons told Spanish sports newspaper Marca.

Salah was injured during Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid.

“In principle it will be between three and four weeks but we will try to reduce those dates, that’s the big goal,” he added.

Egypt begins their campaign in World Cup Group A against Uruguay on June 15, before facing hosts Russia on June 19 and Saudi Arabia on June 25.

This means if Salah takes four weeks to recover, he could be fit in time for the knock-out phases.

Egypt reached the tournament after Salah scored a 95th minute penalty to help them beat Congo 2-1 in October.

Salah, who scored 44 goals in a sensational first season for Liverpool after joining from Roma, was voted Player of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association this month.
