Release Sowore Or Go To Jail, Federal High Court Tell DSS DG

Sowore

The Federal High Court, Abuja, has threatened to jail the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, over his refusal to release pro-democracy campaigner and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.

In a “notice of disobedience to order of court” issued by the court on Thursday and addressed to the DSS DG, the Federal High Court directed the boss of the secret police to comply with its directive or face grave consequences, which includes “commitment to prison”.

Sowore has remained in detention more than 24 hours after meeting his bail condition as set by Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday in a ruling.

He was arrested in Lagos on August 3, 2019 and had been slammed with a seven-count charge bordering on treasonable felony and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari.

One Year After Resignation, Govt's Website Still Lists Adeosun, Fayemi As Ministers

Kemi Adeosun and Kayode Fayemi

The Federal Government’s website, www.nigeria.gov.ng, has listed the former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, as a current cabinet member, one year after her resignation.

Adeosun, who had been replaced by Zainab Ahmed as Minister of Finance, resigned on September 18, 2018 following calls for investigation into allegations that she forged her National Youth Service Corps certificate.

Also, checks showed that the government listed the Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, as Minister of Solid Minerals, 16 months after his exit from the Federal Executive Council.

Fayemi took charge at the Ministry of Solid Minerals on November 11, 2015 but resigned in May 2018 to pursue his governorship ambition in Ekiti State.

Deputy Secretary-General to the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, who served the Nigerian government as the Minister for Environment from November 2015 to December 2016, is still being recognised as a member of FEC on the government website.

Mohammed was officially sworn in as Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York on February 28, 2017.

Findings showed that the Nigerian government website is showing the names, portfolio, and bio of ministers in the last tenure, one month after Buhari formed a new cabinet.

Investigations by our correspondent indicated over 20 of the new ministers’ portfolio and bio had not been uploaded on the website of the government to reflect a change in the executive council of the government.

President Buhari on August 21 assigned portfolios to the 43 newly inaugurated ministers, a month after they were appointed.

All the new ministers had since commenced work in their respective ministries and participated in the inaugural FEC meeting chaired by Buhari in Abuja on September 11 this year.

Checks by our correspondent on Wednesday showed that the government had not replaced the names, portfolio and bio of former Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udo Udoma; former Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed; and former Minister of Defence, Brig. Gen Mansur Ali (retd) with the new ministers.

In the Ministry of Communications, the website stated that Adebayo Shittu, remained at the helm of affairs while it listed the former Minister of State for Education, Anthony Onwuka; former Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed, and former Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Jibrin, as part of the government’s cabinet.

The government website indicated that Audu Ogbeh and Heneiken Lokpobiri remained the country’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, respectively.

Other names that had not been changed included the former Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan; former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelema; and former Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole.

In addition, the new Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, was named as the Minister of State for Health on the website.

The former Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau; former Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu’s portfolio and bio had also not been removed.

The government website also indicated that Babatunde Fashola was still the Minister of Power, Works and Housing even though the ministry had been split into two – Ministry of Power and Ministry of Works and Housing.

Sowore Spends Night In Jail Despite Fulfiling His Bail Conditions

Omoyele Sowore

The Nigerian government is yet to release the detained publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, despite receiving an affidavit of compliance to the court order directing his release on Wednesday morning.

Marshal Abubakar, a lawyer with the Chambers of Mr Sowore’s lead counsel, Femi Falana told PREMIUM TIMES on Wednesday night that they left the office of Nigeria’s State Security Service at 10.30 p.m. on Wednesday without Mr Sowore.

This was despite the court order which had instructed an immediate release of the respondent.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how Mr Sowore’s lawyers submitted documents indicating full compliance to the order for Mr Sowore’s release at the SSS office where it was received by an official, Ayuba Adam, at 10.08 a.m on Wednesday.

Following the account of Mr Abubakar who deposed to the affidavit of the compliance, Mr Sowore’s lawyers left the SSS office over 12 hours after fulfilling their end of the September 24 decision of the court, without the SSS doing the same.

Mr Abubakar said the SSS officials asked them to return on Thursday to “discuss with the SSS DG,” Yusuf Bichi.

Story

The Federal High Court on Tuesday had ordered the immediate release of Mr Sowore who was arrested on August 3 for planning a revolutionary protest, the #RevolutionNow.

The protest was held in parts of the country amidst clampdown of the protesters by security forces.

On September 20, the government filed seven count charges against Mr Sowore accusing him of alleged treasonable felony, fraud and cyberstalking among others.

After withdrawing an application for Mr Sowore’s bail on Tuesday, the prosecution lawyer, G. A. Agbadua, asked the court to determine whether “in the interest of national security,” Mr Sowore should be granted freedom or not.

The Nigerian government under President Muhammadu Buhari had been condemned for its treatment of Mr Sowore and its disregard to court orders by many, including Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka.

Mr Soyinka had reacted to reports about Mr Sowore’s charges, saying the Buhari administration had “reached an unprecedented level of paranoia” .

Several orders for the release of a former National Security Adviser, Samba Dasuki, who was arrested in 2015 have not been complied with.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Ibrahim Tanko, recently said he will not tolerate disregard for court judgments.

Fraud: Osinbajo Must Defend Allegations Against Jonathan And Saraki - Timi Frank

Timi Frank

A political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Timi Frank, has said that now that the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has sued him, it is time for the RCCG's pastor to prove several allegations he made against former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, among others.

Frank told the Vice President that he won't be intimidated by going to court, saying the VP has record of intimidating the media, Civil Societies and social crusaders.

Reacting through a statement on Thursday to the declaration by Osinbajo that he would waive his immunity to pursue a libel case against him, Frank asked

"why didn’t he (Osinbajo) do the same when the issue of alleged misappropriation of 5.8bn contract at NEMA came up?

"Why didn’t he sue the wife of the President when she alleged that the Social Investment Programme of this administration has failed. As one who oversees that, I would have expected him to sue the wife of the president or waive his immunity for the relevant graft agencies to investigate him.

"More recently, it was alledged by the spokesperson of the foremost anti corruption agency in Nigeria that the same N-SIP is riddled with corruption. I wonder why he’s not suing EFCC or the spokesperson."

While recalling some of the allegations Osinbajo made against some other public officials before, Frank said: "Osinbajo should be informed that his statements against the likes of former President Goodluck Jonathan and Sen. Bukola Saraki will also be used as evidence against him once he enters the dock.

"It is worthy to note that it is in the character of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo to intimidate Nigerians, media houses and civil societies by court processes. He rushed to court and filled a motion ex-parte in 2015 against AIT and NTA not to air a documentary of him. Another case in hand was when Prof. Osinbajo through his solicitors asked google to remove/ suspend a video published by Roots TV from YouTube as it was termed ‘defamatory publication’. Why does he not want Nigerians to scrutinize his person? Is he hiding anything? Has he forgotten he is holding a public office?

"If I were Pastor Osinbajo, what would bother me at this point would be the numerous allegations from within as well as manifest plot against him because of his alleged financial dealings in some of the agencies under him."

On the statement that he was ready to waive his immunity, the political activist said: "As heartwarming as Prof. Osinbajo offer to waive his constitutional immunity is, it is really not his to waive. The immunity from prosecution applies to him as long as he remains the Vice President.

If he is certain that the allegations levied against him from all quarters in recent times are false, then he can choose to resign from office to challenge me and others with libel suit. This is against the background that as a sitting Vice President, he is likely to interfere in the judicial process as well as use public funds.

"I am a social crusader and all I have done all my life is to fight for the common man and no amount of intimidation and blackmail will stop me. Prof. Osinbajo is out solely to intimidate the media and civil society groups but I can assure him that I can not easily be intimidated. He knows the people fighting him and giving him out. What should bother him is his associate that have betrayed him."

Mr Vice President, give us a break, resign and stop intimidating us!

Signed:
Comrade Timi Frank

N125 salary in 1981 far better than N30,000 now – Labour groans

Mr Abdussobur Salaam, the National Public Relations Officer, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has advocated for the elimination of disparity in workers’ wages to enhance productivity in the country.

NAN reports that Salaam made the call at the first memorial lecture in honour of the late Adoro Obiageli of the National Mathematical Centre (NMC) on Wednesday, at Sheda in Kwali Area council.

Speaking on the theme “Nigerian workers and the struggle for survival”, he said that there was a correlation between the salary of workers and the wealth of a nation.

According to him, until Nigeria evolves a salary structure that will make workers happy, the country will not advance.

“We believe so much that there are too many inequalities in the country and that the absence of social justice has also been a major problem that has affected the nation.

“And the only solution is to establish a social justice in this country and bridge the inequality gap between the rich and the poor.

“The N30,000 new minimum wage we are talking about today is even grossly inadequate.

“This is because we have been able to discover that the minimum wage of N125 given to workers in 1981 is far better than the N30,000 that is being given now.

“Until we are able to move from the era of starvation wages to that of living wages that will be able to improve people’s lives and take care of their needs, we may not have progress in the country,” he said.

Woman On The Run After 60-year-old Lover Dies During S*x

Hotel room where the unfortunate incident happened

A yet-to-be identified woman is on the run after her sexagenarian lover, Raji Adio, died while they were allegedly making love in a room at the River Bank Hotel in the Ijora-Badia area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the 60-year-old Adio, visited the hotel, located at No. 89 Gasikiya College Road, Ijora-Badia, in company with the fleeing woman and requested a room for a short-time rest.

After paying, the manager of the hotel, Williams Ekezie, released the key to one of the rooms, and when Adio and the woman had settled down, the manager left the premises to attend a morning devotion at the Revelation Church opposite the hotel.

It was learnt that a cleaner at the hotel, John Chuks, saw the woman running out of the room, but before he could alert his co-workers, she had disappeared.

When our correspondent visited the hotel, Williams said the woman escaped because Chuks, rushed to the church to inform him of what he saw instead of chasing after her.

The manager stated, “Both Adio and the woman were regular customers, so on the day of the incident, they both came around 8am to book a room for short-time rest. Immediately payment was made, I issued a receipt to Adio and gave him the key to one of the rooms. Afterwards, I left the reception to attend a morning devotion at a church opposite the hotel. Almost all members of staff of the hotel attend the devotion before business will commence for the day.

“As the devotion was going on, Chuks suddenly rushed to inform us that he suspected that something strange had happened because of the way a woman rushed out from one of the rooms and ran out of the hotel. We quickly chased after her, but it was too late.

“If someone was at the reception, the woman wouldn’t have escaped, because the receptionist would have asked for Adio when the woman was leaving. But the cleaner, who was fortunate to have seen her while running away, came to call us instead of chasing after her to prevent her escape.

“When we went back to the room to find out what had happened, we saw Adio lying naked on the bed and on close examination, we realised that he was dead. We also found the tissue paper that both of them used during their romp on the floor, while the man’s clothes were on the table. I suspect that the woman quickly dressed up and rushed out of the room after Adio died.”

After efforts to ascertain the woman’s whereabouts proved abortive, Chuks said the matter was reported at the Ijora-Badia Police Division and detectives were sent to investigate the matter.

The cleaner said, “I was coming downstairs from one of the rooms and wanted to go and meet my colleagues at the church. But on my way downstairs, I saw the woman running out of one of the rooms on the second floor; so, I rushed to the church to alert my colleagues and we started searching for the woman but did not find her.

“I don’t know if it was a tricycle that she boarded or a motorcycle, but I searched for her everywhere but did not find her. The woman is slim and tall, but no one could pinpoint her whereabouts. So, when I got back, I was told that Ekezie had gone to report to the police and police personnel later visited the hotel to investigate the matter.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that Ekezie was arrested and detained in connection with the incident, but he was later released and had been visiting the police station daily as part of the investigation.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said a manhunt had been launched for the woman, adding that investigation was ongoing to determine if Adio died while having s*x, or if something else was responsible for his death.

Elkana stated, “We started by deploying our homicide detectives in the crime scene; they cordoned off the place to see if there was anything that could aid the investigation, because we are not sure if it is murder or not.

“So, we can’t conclude from the onset and that is why we have commenced investigation into the matter and launched a manhunt for the woman. We are leaving no stone unturned to arrive at the truth about what actually happened, because we want to ascertain if it was a death caused by him having sex or whether something else was responsible for his death; so, we are still investigating.”

Barcelona Confirm Messi Thigh Strain

Lionel Messi has sustained a strain in his left thigh, Barcelona confirmed on Wednesday.

Messi was substituted at half-time of Barca’s 2-1 win over Villarreal on Tuesday in what was the striker’s first start of the season.

He had previously been out with a calf injury sustained on August 5 and Barcelona have not indicated when they expect their captain to return from his latest setback.

“First team player Leo Messi has a strain in the adductor of his left thigh,” a club statement read. “He is out and his recovery will dictate his availability.”

Messi is expected to miss his team’s visit to Getafe in La Liga on Saturday.

Barcelona then play at home to Inter Milan in the Champions League next Wednesday before hosting Sevilla in the league four days later.

They will hope to have the 32-year-old back as soon as possible, particularly after a rocky opening to the season that has included only three wins from seven matches in all competitions.

After recovering from his calf problem, Messi made substitute appearances against Borussia Dortmund and Granada before being deemed ready to start against Villarreal.

He set up the opening goal, providing the cross for Antoine Griezmann to head in after six minutes. Despite Messi going off at the interval, Barca secured a comfortable 2-1 victory at Camp Nou.

“I will waive my constitutional immunity to enable the most robust adjudication of these claims of libel and malicious falsehood.”

Pastor Paul Enenche Reportedly Resurrects Dead Baby With Hole In The Heart (photos)

Pastor Enenche resurrects dead baby

A dead baby with hole in the hearth has been reportedly resurrected by Pastor Paul Enenche at the Glory Dome, Abuja.

The baby, who is barely a year old, was said to have been diagnosed with hole in the hearth about 11 months ago.

The testimony was shared by the baby's mother amid tears of joy.

The visibly elated mother told the joyous congregation that the previous night, it was a tug of war as the baby could not sleep while battling with distress.

She said when she woke up around 6am, she discovered that the baby had stopped breathing.

“I covered her and brought to her the service around 9am. Till we got here, I was monitoring her breathe and she was still not breathing. However, during the course of the service while Daddy was declaring and ministering in worship, she jacked back to life,” the elated mother said.

Responding amid songs of worship, Dr. Paul Enenche, the Senior Pastor, DIGC, revealed that during the ministration, the Holy Spirit whispered to him of the resurrection miracle.

“Only God can take this glory. I heard it clearly during the course of ministration through worship songs but for one reason or the other, it was not announced.”

Dr. Becky Enenche, who is a medical doctor, confirmed to the excitement of the congregation the miracle after she used her stethoscope to auscultate the breathe of the child.

Drama As Protesters Storm Lagos Assembly, Demand Probe Of Ambode (Photo)

The protesters

The Nation reports that protesters under the aegis of Lagos Youth Vanguard (LYV) on Tuesday stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly to demand the probe of former governor Akinwunmi Ambode over alleged corrupt activities.

The protesters, who chanted solidarity songs, were led by the Patron of LYV, Mr. Rasak Olokooba and the President of the Group, Mr. Ibrahim Ekundina.

Some of the placards of the protesters read: “Ambode, submit yourself for probe,” “Ambode must be probed,” “EFCC do your job,” “Ambode is a thief,” “Ambode awarded fake contracts,” and “Ambode, return Lagos money.”

The Lagos Youth Vanguard stated in their leaflet that were distributed to journalists that Ambode “deliberately laid landmine through the obvious improper, inappropriate and insufficient content in his handover note that should serve as a guide to the incoming administration in the tradition of every civilised public officer.”

They accused Ambode of flouting so many government procedures, saying that he refused to abide by the procurement laws.

He was accused of wrong priority in policies and programmes and abandoning the track that can bring about development in the state.

“We call for his probe and investigation with a view to apportioning penalty and dishing out appropriate penalties.

“We want to assure the good people of Lagos State, including all the people that care about Lagos and the people of Lagos that we will continue to pursue every legitimate means until justice is done,” they said.

Speaking to journalists in an interview, Mr Rasak Olokooba, said that it was good to be fair to every administration.

Olokooba added that they had watched events for 90 days and that there were clear indications that the former governor had been going about to disrupt the activities of the current administration.

“For every government that is going out, you leave a template for the coming government to succeed.

“Ambode handed over a very rickety handing over note that cannot assist the current administration.

“If you go round the state today you will see that there is no governor that would inherit such state and the people of the state would be happy with him, but thank God the goodwill enjoyed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is still intact if not, by now the people of Lagos State would have been complaining bitterly.

“Put all these things together and add it to what the EFCC said recently that they were going to conduct an investigation into the activities of the former governor Akinwunmi Ambode, you would see that we are right,” he said.

The activist insisted that anybody could be investigated anytime, but that they were shocked by what happened at the residence of former governor Ambode in Epe, when the operatives of the EFCC wanted to search his residence.

He described what happened there as very ungentlemanly, adding that this was not how statesmen behave and that statesmen respect institutions and apparatuses of the government.

“Also, the parliament has promised us that they were going to look into the activities of the last administration, but we have not heard anything from them.

“I am a taxpayer, I pay education tax, I pay the salaries of the Governor from my tax and I must be concerned about how the money is being spent likewise other Nigerians.

“The former governor must be accountable for how he ran the affairs of the state in the last four years. We want him to clear his name. Gone are the days when people just hear of probe and you don’t take it up,” he said

Olokooba maintained that they were taking the matter up because the EFCC and the parliament had spoken about it.

He stressed that the rest of the world was watching Nigeria, which he said must work as it represents 2.5 % of the population of the world.

“We are the most populous black nation in the world and after Cairo it is Lagos among the most cosmopolitan cities in Africa.

“We don’t want anybody to mismanage Lagos. We want this to be a deterrent to others such as local governments chairmen, senators and others in public offices who might want to do what the last administration did.

“Look at the state of Lagos, people were complaining bitterly over the litters of refuse in the state though they are disappearing now. Look at Badagry Road, you would agree with me that you are also part of what we are doing today as journalists,” he said.

Addressing the protesters, the representative of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Hon. Rotimi Olowo stated that the protesters were right as their action was constitutional.

Olowo emphasized that the House had commenced investigations into the government of Ambode and that they would look into the petition as a House and do their jobs as expected.

The lawmaker added that they were having a committee meeting shortly before the protesters arrived to look into the finance of the state and ensure that the road in the state were motorable.

Drama As Youths Storm Abuja Streets To Protest Against Bobrisky, Say Behaviour Ungodly

Bobrisky

Punch Metro reports that Nigerian youths numbering over 500 on Wednesday took to the streets in Abuja to protest against what they described as moral decadence of Idris Okunneye popularly known as Bobrisky.

The protesters, under the aegis of National Youths Council of Nigeria, while disowning him, said they stood by the National Centre for Arts and Culture, National Council of Women Society, Christian Association of Nigeria and other organizations that had taken a stand against Bobrisky and his activities.

During the protests, the youths advanced from the NYCN secretariat to major landmarks in the FCT like the National Assembly, Force Headquarters and stopped at NCAC.

They bore inscriptions and placards all condemning the negative culture promoted by Bobrisky and his cohorts.

The Vice President of NYCN (North Central Zone), Mukhtar Jebba, described the activities of Bobrisky as “ungodly, unhealthy and disgusting.”

According to him, what Bobrisky and his cronies were promoting was completely against the moral, cultural and spiritual values of Nigeria.

He said, “Consequently, the NYCN today, September 18 2019 declares Bobrisky as persona non grata, as he is a man (not a woman). For national interest, we call on the ever-conscious, ever-ready, combatant Nigerian youths and comrades of like minds to, without fear or favour, kick out Bobrisky and his likes wherever they come across them. Nigeria is not a place for LGBT and we shall fight this to the end.”

Jebba called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Service to use their good offices and their men to stop the likes of Bobrisky from rubbishing the country’s pride and image.

The Director-General of NCAC, Otunba Segun Runsewe, while addressing the protesters, commended them for taking a stand against the vices promoted by Bobrisky.

He said Nigeria’s respected cultural values must not be eroded by unguided people like Bobrisky, adding that NCAC “is working to redirect the negative trend.”

Messi Opens Up, Speaks On Favourite Player To Win The Ballon d'Or 2019 Award

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi, the Barcelona captain, has insisted that he does not know the favourite player to win this year’s Ballon d’ Or.

The 32-year-old, who has won the Ballon d’ Or five times, also described the world individual top-prize award as ‘strange’.

According to the Argentina captain, no one really knows who will be the favourite player to win the Ballon d’ Or this year.

“Recently they’ve looked more at the club’s results, which isn’t a bad thing.

“Sometimes it’s been for the World Cup which not everyone values the same. I don’t know.

“Honestly, there isn’t a specific line on which you can define the Ballon d’Or winner.

“I’ve never felt I was the favourite or not. As I’ve said before, individual awards are secondary to me.”

Messi is one of the favourites to lift this year’s Ballon d’ Or after he netted 51 goals and assisted another 22 in all competitions last season.

XENOPHOBIA: Take South African govt to ICJ, Akinyemi urges FG

A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof Bolaji Akinyemi, has urged the Federal Government to drag its South African counterpart before the International Court of Justice for its failure to cater for Nigerian citizens resident in South Africa.

Several Nigerians living in South Africa had come under a series of xenophobic attacks. The latest attacks, which started on September 1, led to a diplomatic row between Nigeria and South Africa, forcing the Federal Government to evacuate Nigerians who expressed interest to return home.

In a statement on Sunday tagged, South African on xenophobic attacks on Nigeria, Akinyemi said the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other immigrants were acts sponsored by the South African state in violation of Article 2, paragraph 2 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, among others.

For instance, the professor of political science pointed out that the statement credited to the South African Minister of International Relations, Dr Grace Pandor, that Nigerians were drug dealers, among other officials, were inciting.

He said, “The statement credited to the South African Minister of International Relations, Dr Grace Naledi Mandisa Pandor, that Nigerians were drug dealers; the statement credited to Deputy Police Minister, Bongani Mkongi, that they fought for their land and that that land would not be surrendered to immigrants.

“The statement credited to the South African Defence Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, that South Africa is an angry nation and that the country could not prevent the xenophobic attacks; and various statements credited to South African diplomats blaming the immigrants.

“The anti-immigrant acts by the South African Immigration service officials which for all practical purposes amount to holding Nigerian immigrants hostage by refusing to allow them to be evacuated; I have come to the conclusion that the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other immigrants are acts sponsored or condoned by the South African state in violation of: Article 2, paragraph 2 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

“Article 2, paragraph 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; United Nations Convention on the elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination; and the International Convention on the Protection of Migrant Workers.

“I, therefore, call on Nigeria to sue South Africa before the International Court of Justice for failure in its duty of care and protection of Nigerian citizens’ resident there. I furthermore call on Nigeria to file complaints against specific South African officials at the International Criminal Court for aiding and abetting the xenophobic attacks.”

Why I don’t interfere in Plateau Assembly’s affairs ―Gov Lalong

Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong has explained that his belief in the independence of the legislature informed his decision not to interfere in the affairs of the Plateau House of Assembly.

Lalong, who served as Speaker of the state legislature during the reign of the former governor, Chief Joshua Dariye, charged state legislative houses to always advocate their independence for effective governance of states.

Speaking on Sunday, in Abuja, at an award ceremony organised by Conference of Former Speakers of State Houses of Assembly, COFSSHA, which he heads as Chairman, the Plateau State governor urged former Speakers of state legislative houses not to shy away from making their contributions in strengthening the state legislatures.

“We must continue to lend our voices to various issues in our polity in order to ensure that the democratic culture is deepened and our people truly experience and harvest the dividends of democracy.

“We cannot shy away from making our contribution to national discourse such as the one relating to strengthening the State Houses of Assembly in such a manner that they will work independently but in collaboration with the executive and the judiciary to ensure good governance and development in our states.

“I am happy to say that in Plateau State, that synergy and collaboration is happening because of my experience as a former speaker and now a governor, where I have supported the House of Assembly to function without any interference and in turn, they have supported us to deliver on our Rescue Mission,”he said.

Noting that Nigeria’s democracy had continued to grow amidst many challenges, he challenged the former leaders of the State Houses of Assembly to come forward with their contributions with a view to overcoming the challenges, given their experiences with people at the local level.

“Our democracy has continued to grow amidst challenges that we all have to put our heads together to overcome. “As past presiding officers of the legislative arm of government at the state level, our appreciation of these challenges is deep because of our direct touch with the people at the grassroots.”

While also noting that:”All of us have supported the issue of autonomy for State Houses of Assembly,” he said Police rescue suspected ritualist from angry mob in Enugu International Democracy Day: UN Chief urges inclusive political process “But beyond the call for autonomy, the synergy, check and balance and collaboration between all arms of government is what we should strive to build because of the interest of our people.”

The governor, who said he was happy to be “at this special occasion that brings together very important stakeholders in the socio-political development of our nation”, explained that “we are here today to among other things, share some thoughts about the contributions of the State Houses of Assembly to the Nigerian Project and indeed highlight the roles the speakers of such Houses have played and are still playing in our socio-political development.”

Lalong explained that “COFSSHA was established primarily to ensure that the reservoir of knowledge and experience acquired by the former presiding officers of state legislatures is not wasted but deployed for the building and sustenance of our democratic experience.”

“That is why since the establishment of the body, we have successfully registered it with the Corporate Affairs Commission and set up a Constitution Drafting Committee to fashion out guidelines on how our organisation will be effectively run,” he explained.

Accoding to Punch Metro, fire on Wednesday gutted the Apata Ibadan depot of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation.

The incident, according to an official of the Corporation who spoke with our correspondent occurred in the loading section of the depot.

The development caused traffic gridlock on Apata-Abeokuta Road.

There has been no official statement as of the time of filing this report, as men of the State Fire Service were battling hard to put off the fire.

The depot was reopened for operation two years ago after many years of neglect.

The reopening of the depot was part of the turn-around maintenance of the government to ease fuel loading and distribution.

The then NNPC Group Managing Director, Maikanti Baru, said that President Muhammadu Buhari was concerned about the ease of fuel distribution and supply to every part of the company, which he said informed his commitment to upgrading of storage facilities across the country.

He stated that the reopening of the depot would ease the stress of transporting fuel from Lagos to Ibadan.
