NIN Registration Is Completely Free, Govt Says

The Nigerian Government has declared that the registration and issuance of the National Identity Number to Nigerians comes at no cost.

This was in response to allegations made by some applicants that they were being asked to pay before they could get thr number. 

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami through his Technical Assistant on Information Technology to the minister, Dr Femi Adeluyi made this rebuttal in a statement at Abuja yesterday. 

"The National Identity Number is completely free for all Nigerians and legal residents with Resident Permit from the Nigeria Immigration Service.

“The National Identity Number is the right of every citizen, based on the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Act 2007, ” he said. 

The Minister said that a directive has also been given to the Director General of NIMC to look into the allegations and bring defaulters to book, if any exist at all.

He concluded by praising the efforts and sacrifices of the staff of NIMC who have all been working tirelessly even after closing hours.
